ciao a tutti

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for your e-mail. Below, please, find information about postgraduate education at Karolinska Institutet (KI).

Postgraduate education at Karolinska Institutet is largely based on the student’s personal research project, which is complemented with courses and clearly specified knowledge requirements. It requires normally a total of fours years’ full-time postgraduate education to acquire a Ph.D. degree.

There is no general admission to postgraduate studies at KI. This means that everyone who applies for admission to postgraduate training at KI has to find a supervisor among established researchers at KI that wants to accept him or her as a postgraduate student.

Please, find first a supervisor and a research group working within your field of interest that is willing to accept you and your research idea (or involve you in a planned/started project). For a list of all KI departments visit this website ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1186&l=en . You can also find a supervisor by looking at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?DB=pubmed and type Karolinska together with your field of interest. On ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=130&l=en you can search for staff (e-mail addresses). For information about postgraduate programs see ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=270&a=15586&l=en (some of these programmes are in the starting phase). When you have found a supervisor that has time and resources and is willing to guide you you write an individual study plan together with him or her and describe how you will be paid during your studies (see ki.se/content/1/c4/06/34/blankett%203,%2...tudieplan%2006-03-14 . doc and ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=534&l=en ). To be accepted as a postgraduate student, the student must also be able to prove general eligibility with at least 120 credit points from previous studies as an undergraduate student at a university (160 credit points from July 1 2007). For more information see ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=270&a=632&l=en . There are no official requirements for the command of the English language. However, you have to present your individual study plan at a seminar in English for a committee at the Department where you want to be registered as a Ph.D. student. After that the head of the Department decides to accept or not accept your request to be a research student.

For foreign students it is also advisable to consider their future career after graduation already at the start of the research training. We would like to suggest that you not only look for supervisors at KI but also try to establish close contacts with a suitable institution in your country. Such collaboration will no doubt facilitate for you to get funds for your research later on.

You are suggested to read the new rules for postgraduate education at ki.se/content/1/c4/84/60/Engelska%20regler.pdf . It is also recommended to read the "Handbook for Postgraduate Students" from the National Agency for Higher Education that you can find on www.doktorandhandboken.nu/english/

You will find more information about postgraduate studies at KI on ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=2415&l=en

Practical information is provided on ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=592&l=en

Specialty training (residency) in Sweden is composed of hospital services in a subordinate position under full professional responsibility (you have to speak Swedish fluently). The training period within the specialty itself and within other relevant fields is in progress during at least five years. Specialty training cannot be commenced until full registration as a Swedish medical practitioner has been achieved. There are no courses at the Swedish medical schools or teaching hospitals leading to the qualification as a specialist.
